about

'The Dance' is a piece in response to Paula Rego’s painting of the same name.

I’m extremely grateful to the artists estate for their generous approval of the use of this image.

When the great Portuguese-British artist Paula Rego passed away in 2022, I was drawn to this moving and bittersweet depiction of the artist herself at various stages of life. It’s a painting I’ve always loved.

I’ve tried to capture a sense of being in the middle of the dance, as part of a cycle, rather than at the beginning to end of a linear life story. I like to imagine this is the music they’re dancing to in the cool moonlight. Whether the presence of a piano would be entirely practical in such a location is perhaps another story.
